πŸ’Έ The Marshmallow Experiment

In 1972, psychologist Walter Mischel, a professor at Stanford University, conducted an experiment where he put pre-school aged children in a room and offered them a choice between eating one marshmallow immediately, or a second marshmallow if they waited for a certain period of time.

During the study, the researcher would leave the child in a private room with a single marshmallow on a table for about 15 minutes and then return. If the child did not eat the marshmallow, he or she would receive the second marshmallow.

As you can imagine, the footage of the children waiting in the room was pretty entertaining. Some kids jumped up and ate the first marshmallow as soon as the researcher closed the door. Others wiggled and bounced around in their chairs as they tried to restrain themselves, but eventually gave in to temptation a few minutes later. And finally, a few of the children did manage to wait the entire time.

Things actually got interesting years down the line...

In follow-up studies, Mischel found unexpected correlations between the results of the marshmallow experiment and the success of the children.

The children who were willing to delay gratification and waited to receive the second marshmallow ended up having higher SAT scores, lower levels of substance abuse, lower likelihood of obesity, better responses to stress, better social skills as reported by their parents, and generally better scores in a range of other life measures.

The researchers followed each child for more than 40 years and over and over again, the group who waited patiently for the second marshmallow succeeded in whatever capacity they were measuring.

In other words, this series of experiments proved that the ability to delay gratification was critical for success in life.

You see this playing out in all areas of life.

  • Eat a healthy meal instead of fast food = stay in shape
  • Do the most important things first instead of what you want to do = have more success
  • Save and invest money instead of spending it all = be rich later

If you want to succeed at something, at some point you will need to be disciplined and take action instead of becoming distracted and doing what’s easy.

Success in nearly every field requires you to ignore doing something easier (delaying gratification) in favor of doing something harder (doing the work).

Can you train yourself to exercise delayed gratification?

You might be thinking that you'e either born with this trait or you're not. It turns out that in fact that is not true!

A subsequent study at the University of Rochester proved that delayed gratification is impacted by your experiences and environment, and can be trained, just like you can train your muscles in the gym.

You train yourself to delay gratification by promising your brain something small and then delivering on your promise over and over. That way, your brain understands that delayed gratification is "worth it."

Here's how you TAKE ACTION practically on this concept:

  1. Set small goals that you can confidently attain.
  2. Use shorter time horizons for your goals, as I discuss here.
  3. Start NOW! RIGHT NOW!

When you hit these small goals over and over again, your brain becomes trained that you can achieve your goals and that hitting your goals and delaying gratification works!

For example, this year one of my personal goals is to learn how to play guitar.

I bought a really cool acoustic guitar and found an online guitar training app that I really like. And yet, watching some of my favorite musicians play could make learning guitar seem like a daunting task.

I set a small goal to play 15 minutes every day, no matter what.

Day after day, I've been hitting my goal. Sometimes 15 minutes is just 15 minutes and sometimes it turns into a much longer practice session.

But every day I play at least 15 minutes and guess what... I can already play a few songs and I've learned a ton in just the first month of playing!

If instead i would have said that i need to play an hour every day, learn music theory and be able to play 5 songs at the end of the first month, I may have stopped playing already.

Small, attainable goals with a short time horizon are much more rewarding and beneficial!
